Indiana Poetry and Writing Groups.
“The Indiana Arts Commission announced the selection of Matthew Graham of Evansville, Indiana, as the new Indiana State Poet Laureate by a selection committee comprised of representatives from Indiana's major institutions of higher education. Graham began his term on January 1st of 2020. During his 35 years in Southern Indiana, Matthew has been a respected and recognized writer, teacher, and advocate for poetry and the arts. Graham has worked with diverse writing groups such as high school students and community writing groups.

The Arts in Indiana contribute nearly 1.4 billion dollars to the States’ economy. The Indiana Arts Commission provides grants and resources to artists working in all genres of the Arts, including poetry and writing. Information about programs can be found on the link above.
The Poetry Society of Indiana provides resources and (when possible) conferences for Indiana poets. Annual dues are $18.00 per year. The group has member poetry clubs in a number of Indiana cities. Please see the link above for more information.
For the past several years, thousands of Indiana high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Your high school is invited to participate!
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules. (The above link is for a Poetry Slam in Michigan City, Indiana, one of many in the State).
The Indiana Writers Center is a group in ** Indianapolis** that supports writers of all levels, from beginners to accomplished authors. The group provides meetings (when possible), news on writing contests, news on publishing resources and other opportunities. The Indiana Writers Center supports all genres of writing, from poetry to fiction to nonfiction. The IWC also has events in Muncie, South Bend, Bloomington, Greencastle and Valparaiso. Write-on Hoosiers, Inc. is a group in Merrillville that supports all genres of writing. It is open to all writers in Northwest Indiana. The group meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. (Email the group for the meeting location). Membership is $20.00 per year. Please see link above for more information.
The Central Indiana Writers Association is a community of writers headquartered on the south side of Indianapolis. The group provides workshops, poetry readings, critique groups and contests. About the author:Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including trips to Indiana. Heine has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies.
